It's been 10 years or more since I started working in this field in various forms.Nowadays I sometimes feel like a dinosaur compared to those practising in areas such as social media (who in turn will no doubt feel dated soon). Luckily the principles of Search Engine Marketing haven't changed that much and the core skills and techniques hold firm for some of the newer techniques and methodologies available.

As an example, the need to research keywords for traditional SEO, is equally applicable for social media. Understanding of meta data and its impact on rankings when constructing any type of page is also critical.

Being able to extract true information and insight from data is also still a key skill. Google Analytics provides countless reports for free these days, but truly understanding, interpreting and actioning based upon those results is still a rare skill.

I'll always try and bring a considered and cohesive approach to any project I get involved in and ask lots of questions - SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), Pay Per Click (Google Adwords) all provide more traffic through to your website. But is it the right traffic, have you thought about the quality of traffic, will it convert and perform a measureable action which allows you to fully measure its impact.
