You may, or may not know the name of this product - Adsense. It's fairly likely that without realising it you have used it though. Adsense is a Google product which allows website owners to merchandise their site(s) with advertising and make extra revenue from it.
Its very easy to ad to any site and quickly Adsense will optimise itself to only show relevant ads to the content of your site. You may only earn a few pence a click or impression but over time this can add up if you receive a reasonable amount of traffic.
On larger transactional sites it's worth bearing in mind that you are probably already paying in one form or another to drive traffic to your site. Once those visitors arrive you need to consider the conversion funnel and ensure the highest percentage possible of those visitors convert to purchase. Adding third party advertising could have a negative effect on this. If you have a smaller site, a blog or maybe an informational based site then this may be the perfect opportunity to make a few pounds from it!
